Furniture Fresh from South Central L.A.

In our October 2011 issue we're spotlighting all of our favorite American-made design. To lend a hand, we've asked Michael and Ruth Storc of the great site Design Patriot to share their top Made in the USA finds with us. This week, they spotlight Cisco Home, a sustanable furniture company based in South Central Los Angeles.

When he was in his early twenties, Cisco Pinedo began making custom furniture for his neighbors out of his home garage in South Central Los Angeles. As his business grew, he started buying abandoned buildings on an industrial strip of Western Avenue in the downtrodden neighborhood where he started. Cisco Home still makes all their upholstered goods, case goods, and their welded and hand-blown glass lighting in Los Angeles (under the name Cisco Brothers), employing over 100 workers in their factories alone. Every item in the huge range of stylish pieces is made with an eye on sustainability and green practices.

Pop 5: Eco Shopping in San Francisco

Pop 5: Eco Shopping in San Francisco

For our newly minted Pop 5 list, we've found the five best places in San Francisco for eco-minded shopping. Thanks to everyone who chimed in with suggestions; we even got some great spots to visit in the East Bay now. In honor of Earth Day this Friday, here are the five best places to shop for eco-friendly goods in SF.

  1. For fashion: Eco Citizen Boutique (2255 Polk St., 415-614-0100) This stylish stop carries fair trade and organic fashions from labels like Prairie Underground and Marais shoes. Better yet, the new-ish space on Polk is actually next door to an eco dry cleaner.
  2. For furniture: Cisco Home (580 Hayes St., 415-436-0131) Specializing in eco-friendly furniture from names like Epoch, John Derian, and Habita, Cisco (pictured) is the ultimate destination for sustainable (if aspirational) pieces.
  3. For jewelry: Manika Jewelry (11 Maiden Lane, 415-399-1990) An alternative to its more traditional Union Square neighbors, Manika carries work by many artisans who work in eco-friendly gold and silver that's reclaimed rather than mined, and the boutique contributes a percentage of sales to local and international charities.
  4. For books and gifts: Green Arcade (680 Market St., 415-431-6800) When I first heard about Green Arcade, I thought, how can they fill a whole store with eco-topical books? The answer: by expanding the definition of eco to include natural and local history, travel and lifestyle guides, even mushroom foraging how-tos, plus a selection of stylish gifts.
  5. For everything else: Branch (345 Ninth St., Ste. 202, 415-626-1012) Even if it weren't earth-friendly, Branch would be one of the best boutiques in town. This gifting haven carries eco accessories, home accents, kitchenware and tabletop items, bed, bath, and baby products, and much more.

Thanks to Standard Magazine for this great photo journal post

Tuesday, March 01, 2011

Cisco Home has a similar philosophy as we do - sustainability being their standard.

They continue to be a leader, making beautiful creations that are also responsibly made.

While crusing by one of their stores recently, we caught a glimpse at their store window.

It bared our name. And made us blush...maybe even swoon for a second.

Cisco Home: Sustainable Furniture

Cisco Home, where do I start? I could have stayed in their store all day admiring their unique furniture and furnishings such as the iron strap chandelier and glass jug lamps. Their furniture is known for their quality of materials and construction, which was evident when I tried to shift some of the furniture and needed a little help.

WEEKEND PHOTO: TIME FOR A BRIGHT IDEA!

I took this photo at Cisco Home in Brentwood awhile back. A blue glass jug pendant light and a large clock side by side.

I happened upon this photo in my archives yesterday and thought that this would make the perfect weekend photo.

Love the idea of time and light side by side...something metaphorical about this photo. The light symbolizes bright ideas and inspiration to me. The clock is a manifestation of the saying carpe diem (seize the day). Time does not stop so go pursue your bright ideas and your inspiration now.

Tomorrow, I'll write about nonsensical things that happen to me, dilemmas on how I couldn't buy something that I wanted, or some bad t.v. show...don't worry...you haven't lost the good old Coco...this post is just an aside.

Happy Sunday!

P.S. My daily COCOCOZY FACEBOOK PAGE reminder. Please remember to "Like" me on Facebook. Making a big push so that we can start the next Facebook only giveaway sooner rather than later. 2000 followers on Facebook means another fabulous linen pillow giveaway. Last time only 50 people entered the Facebook giveaway so the odds are good. If you are already following there...please "Suggest to Friends"! Today, on Facebook, I'll put up a few extra photos from Cisco Home in Brentwood. Enjoy!

Lighting: Handblown Glass Pendants from Cisco Brothers

From Janet

When I visited the new Cisco Home Studio in San Francisco last week, I was immediately drawn to the hand-blown glass pendant lights in jewel-like colors. The lamps are available in clear, aqua, emerald, amber, and rose glass at Cisco Home Stores in San Francisco, Pasadena, Los Angeles, and at ABC Carpet & Home in New York and Delray, Florida. Orders can be placed by phone.
